Critics consider the film to be an invaluable documentary of LGBT culture\, and a thoughtful exploration of race\, class\, gender\, and sexuality in America. \nIn 2016\, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for its cultural and historical significance. The film is directed by female filmmaker Jennie Livingston\, who continues her activism through film today.
